Question 1

Should I hire a BI analyst, a BI developer or a business intelligence consultant?

Accepted Answer

Hire a BI analyst to investigate performance and explain findings. Choose a BI developer when the main work involves reporting models, integrations and technical implementation. A business intelligence consultant helps define requirements, priorities and the reporting approach. These roles can overlap, so assess the freelancer’s actual responsibilities and portfolio rather than relying on their job title.

Question 2

Which tools should a freelance BI specialist know?

Accepted Answer

The relevant tools depend on your existing environment. SQL supports querying and combining business records; Excel can support focused analysis; Power BI, Tableau or Looker can support shared reporting. For Power BI projects, ask about DAX, Power Query and data modelling experience where relevant. The freelancer should explain how their proposed tools fit your data, users and maintenance requirements.

Question 3

Can a freelancer work with our existing CRM or ERP data?

Accepted Answer

Yes, provided the required information is available through approved exports, database access or supported connections. Share the system names, available fields and reporting requirements before hiring. The freelancer should check record identifiers, relationships and historical coverage before promising a combined report. Connector costs and administrator involvement should be confirmed separately.

Question 4

Can business intelligence explain why two reports show different numbers?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A BI analyst can investigate differences in filters, date fields, calculation rules, refresh times and source records. The project should identify the cause, document the agreed definition and test the corrected output. Where systems record different business events, the appropriate result may be a reconciliation that explains the difference rather than identical totals.

Question 5

Do small businesses need a data warehouse before hiring a BI consultant?

Accepted Answer

No. A focused BI project can start with spreadsheets, exported records or an existing database. A warehouse becomes relevant when consolidation, history, access control or reporting demands justify it. Ask the consultant to assess your current setup and recommend the smallest maintainable solution that meets the agreed requirements.
